Multiple Bears Spotted Sitting Near Downtown Andover
Andover, Maine – What began as a single wildlife sighting quickly turned into a remarkable scene Tuesday morning as several black bears were spotted calmly sitting near the edge of downtown Andover.
Residents first reported seeing one bear resting near a wooded patch off a local road. Within minutes, additional sightings came in from nearby streets, with witnesses reporting as many as three to four bears scattered around the same general area.
“They were just sitting there,” said one resident. “Not fighting, not running — just watching.”
Drivers slowed as they passed, and a small crowd gathered at a safe distance to observe the unusual moment. Some residents described the bears as appearing relaxed, occasionally shifting positions before eventually wandering back into the tree line together.
Wildlife experts note that Maine has a large population of black bears, and late summer and early fall often bring increased movement as bears search for food. While it is less common to see multiple bears in close proximity near town, it can happen when food sources are abundant.
Local officials are reminding residents to take precautions:
-
Secure trash and recycling bins
-
Remove bird feeders temporarily
-
Keep pet food indoors
-
Avoid approaching wildlife
-
Do not attempt to photograph bears at close range
No injuries or property damage were reported, and authorities confirmed the bears did not display aggressive behavior.
Residents are advised to remain cautious but calm. Wildlife encounters are part of living in western Maine, and most bears avoid human contact when not provoked.
Andover Maine News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if further sightings occur.
